Avon Old Farms School

The students and wood working teachers at Avon Old Farms School came together to construct a pavilion with trees taken from the construction site. They used a portable saw mill to cut the tress into timbers where the pavillion was to be constructed. The frame work is all put together with wood dowels, made by the students from local Cherry trees. Even the roof boards were sawn from trees on site.
The fireplace was constructed from the remains of an old boulder brownstone bridge. We had these stones cut into squares and rectangles so they had chiseled faces. Additional stone facing and length cutting were done on site. We used a brownstone die to tint the mortar and a 4-1/2 by 5 foot single piece of stone to cap the chimney. On the sides of the fireplace are 4" thick brownstone countertops with wood storage underneath.
Students also aided in this process by mixing cement, hoisting materials with a rope and pulley and making some of the stone cuts.We finished the fireplace off with a bronze plaque that was hand made by a local artist. It was dedicated to the boys of the Nimrod Club. The students worked very hard and showed a lot of interest throughout this project and were a pleasure to work with. The end result: A great addition to the already beautiful campus at Avon Old Farms School and fireplace for the students to enjoy for many years to come.
